Movement Music Festival - Detroit

A Dub Supreme Showcase Bio

A Dub Supreme began in 2003 as a monthly party dedicated to keeping classic reggae and dub music alive during a time when dances in Detroit were mostly ruled by the popular bashment style music of the day.

Founder Ranking Gimp (Ryan Gimpert), along with selectors Ras Michael, Tommy Ferrara, and later Papa Joshua, a veteran of the Ann Arbor/Ypsi reggae scene, made up the crew for these late night sessions which combined a diverse crowd, heavy bass, ganja smoke, and a vinyl-only policy.

For the current iteration of A Dub Supreme, Gimp takes his original productions to the stage for sessions that incorporate live dub mixing, Papa Joshua’s timeless selections, and a rotating cast of vocalists performing in a ‘revival style.’ The last few years have seen a successful run on the patio at Motor City Wine and a well-received appearance at Chicago Dub Club.

For this special Movement showcase, they will be joined by A Dub Supreme regulars King Mellowman and Jah T, who will share the mic with local greats King Jazzy, King Arubis, Skarpion Sting, and Channel Badso. As an added bonus, guest on the sound will be Kinky P, selectress with Chicago’s Beat Down Sound System.

The art form known as dub has traditionally lived in the studio, but at an A Dub Supreme event, the visual component of live mixing and heaviness of vinyl combines with a free-flowing lyrical charge to bring forward an experience that feels new and raw—yet sounds authentically like an old school dancehall session.
