Detroit has produced lots of notable girl groups from the Motown era and the city has been a hotbed of talent in the areas of Gospel, Soul, Blues, Rock, Hip-Hop, and Techno. Enter Dames Brown – an eclectic group of singers from Detroit who are making their mark on the House music scene, both at home and abroad.
Originally formed in 2008, Dames Brown began as “777” to provide background vocals for Jazz saxophonist, Stan Barnes. By 2010 they were singing background vocals for LJ Reynolds of The Dramatics and appeared in several music videos with him.
In 2015, Athena Johnson joined Teresa Marbury and LaRae Starr, to comprise the current group. With extensive backgrounds in Jazz, R&B, Funk, Soul, and Gospel singing, they bring a wide range of musical stylings to their performances.
From 2015 to 2018, the Dames performed at famed venues in the Detroit area: The Fox Theatre, Music Hall, The Ford Performing Arts Center, The Aretha Franklin Amphitheatre, Hart Plaza, Orchestra Place, and on The Detroit Princess cruise ship. They were featured performers for The Concert of Colors, The Movement Festival, The Smooth Jazz Series, and The 70s Soul Explosion – opening for the likes of Michael Franks, Parliament-Funkadelic, Soul Clap, and RZA of The Wu-Tang Clan with audiences in the thousands.
Then in 2018, Dames Brown was signed with Defected Records, a London label most known for promoting House Music groups. That led to a series of trips to Europe to perform at festivals in England, Spain, and Croatia. That same year, the Dames partnered with House Music diva, Sophie Lloyd, to release their first big hit entitled, “Calling Out.” The elaborate music video they produced to showcase the song has over 12 million views on YouTube and has been re-mixed by some of London’s hottest House Music deejays. It soared to #2 on Traxsource. In 2021, brought their Debut Single "What Would You Do?" feat. Dez Andreas & Amp Fiddler with a follow up single, "Introducing Dames Brown" to be released in 2022. Currently, the Dames are in the studio recording new music and preparing for their next trip to Europe.
Dames Brown has been featured on record albums by noted artists like Amp Fiddler, Will Sessions, Ben Westbeech , Horse Meat Disco and Lee Scratch Perry. They have received a “Detroit Ambassadors” award and have been nominated for Best R&B Female Group and Best Urban Album at Detroit’s two main music awards shows.
When asked to describe their greatest performance, the ladies gush about performing in front of a crowd of 10,000 fans for the Defected Records inaugural London Music Festival. But while large crowds and metrics bring professional satisfaction and media acclaim, their most meaningful moment as singers came when they performed at private Acappella concert for the elderly patients at the Farmington Hills Senior Center who are coping with Alzheimer's and dementia.
