Hart Plaza
Originally planned as a grassy lawn area in 1924, it wasn’t until the 70’s that Hart Plaza was conceptualized and brought to life by Isamu Noguchi. Hart Plaza has become, almost unintentionally, a tribute to the strength of people - memorials in the plaza include “Gateway to Freedom”, recognizing Detroit’s role in helping emancipated slaves into Canada, and “Transcending”, a giant arch celebrating American Labor. What this all means for Movement is a palpable energy in the air. Whether in the amphitheater, next to the river, or enjoying the massive underground bunker, we are not separate from our past, from our tactile environment - we are in the continuum.
